China Assures Assistance on Teesta and Rohingya Issues: Foreign Minister

Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has stated that China has assured cooperation regarding Bangladesh’s membership in BRICS, the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan, and the resolution of the Rohingya crisis.

He shared this information during a briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday (June 27) afternoon, concerning the Prime Minister’s recently concluded visits to Malaysia and China.

The Foreign Minister said that bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China have reached new heights. As part of the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan, feasibility studies for the project will commence very soon. China has also assured cooperation in Bangladesh’s efforts to join the BRICS bloc.

Responding to a question regarding the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC), Dr. Khalilur Rahman stated that Bangladesh is not making any immediate decisions on this matter. The issue is being observed and evaluated, considering potential benefits and challenges.

He further informed that several significant issues were also highlighted during the Prime Minister’s visit to Malaysia. In particular, discussions focused on the regularization of undocumented Bangladeshi workers residing in Malaysia and the recruitment of new laborers.

Additionally, the Foreign Minister mentioned that Malaysia has assured support for Bangladesh’s efforts to gain membership in ASEAN, the regional bloc of Southeast Asian nations.

From the government’s perspective, the Prime Minister’s visits to Malaysia and China are regarded as crucial steps in strengthening Bangladesh’s diplomatic relations and expanding economic cooperation.
